Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 14 August 2008

Supporting community

• ON Thursday last week I joined Liberal Democrat shadow home secretary Chris Huhne and Keith Moffitt, the leader of Camden Council, as they visited Castlehaven Community Association.
And on Friday I went back to take part in their community festival, linked to the Camden-wide Unity Football Cup. I’d like to thank Eleanor Botwright, the director of the association, and all her team for the work that they are doing to support young people, children and older people in the community. Their activities are valued by councillors of all parties, their reputation for high quality work is well-deserved, and they are attracting a wide range of funders, including the council, the Youth Justice Board and a number of trusts and foundations.
In particular, there is close working between the council and CCA in key programmes to identify young people at risk of getting involved in crime, and offering support and activities to help them on to the right path.
The great thing, of course, is that there are so many associations in Camden working to give every young person the opportunity to succeed, alongside the council’s own services. From Fortune Green to Fitzrovia and from Kentish Town to Coram’s Fields there are both well-established associations and new projects developing to meet the needs of young people. It’s great that the council has put more funding into youth services this year and last year, so that more of these projects can be funded across the borough, and that it is going to support the type of excellent work which I saw at Castlehaven.
