Last-gasp promotion
for Heathside heroes

Athletes in party mood after final fixture win secures Southern League Division Two slot

LONDON Heathside’s senior men’s team secured promotion into Division Two of the Southern League on Saturday when they won their final fixture of the season at Kingston.

The team of 22 Heathside heroes went into the meet knowing that only a win would do if they were to escape Division Three and ignite their promotion party.
Among the star performers was Bill Awere, who recorded a personal best of 53 seconds flat to win the ‘A’ string 400m. Moses Arthur also gained valuable points after winning his 100m ‘A’ race in 11 secs flat and his 200m ‘A’ race in 22.1 secs.
Competing in the ‘B’ team events, Luke McNally clinched double gold, winning the 100m in 11.3 secs and the 200m in 23.1 secs.
The gold rush continued with Ricardo Beckford and Israel Nworgu winning their respective 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles events. McNally, Arthur, Beckford and Lanre Ali-Balogun then combined to win the 4x100m relay in 44 secs flat.
The Heathside contingent were also victorious over the distance events, with Paul Lemmon winning the ‘A’ string 3000m steeplechase (pictured), and John Flahive winning the ‘B’ team event.
In a nail-bitingly close contest, Heathside picked up precious points in the field with Lanre putting in a show-stopping display to win the ‘A’ string high jump, triple jump, shot putt and discus.
The combined efforts were enough to earn Heathside victory on the day with 118 points, sealing a second place finish in the final league standings.
Afterwards team manager Flahive said: “I’d like to thank all the athletes, volunteer officials and coaches for their season-long effort. In a division where only two teams get promoted, even contributions that might seem modest really mattered.
“Just a handful of points were the difference between promotion and staying in Division Three.
“So this was a genuine team achievement.”
