Camden through the eyes of a 10-year-old

MORE police on the streets and less anti-social behaviour sound more like the suggestions of a politician than those of a 10-year-old girl.
But thanks to a competition – in which more than 250 Year 5 pupils from nine schools were invited to write a letter to Camden’s mayor on the subject of My Local Neighbourhood: What is good? What is bad? What can be made better? – Camden’s young people showed they are becoming increasingly politically active.
The competition was organised and supported by Camden Civic Society and Camden’s school improvement service.
The aim of the competition was to encourage children to be aware of the local environment and express their views about how it could be improved.
The winning entry was written by Bethany Plews, aged 10, of St Aloysius Junior School.
Her letter included praise for Camden’s “fantastic parks”, criticism for the “noise at night”, and suggestions for “posters reminding people not to make too much noise at night”.
At a prize-giving ceremony in the Mayor’s Parlour in June, Bethany and the two runners-up, Hannah Betts, 10, from St Patrick’s Primary, and Eva Gewirtz-O’Reilly, 10, from Torriano Junior, received their prizes from Martin Morton and Aileen Hammond, from Camden Civic Society, and the Mayor of Camden, Councillor Nurul Islam.
Bethany won a £20 book voucher and £500 for her school to spend on books for personal, social and health education and citizenship. The two runners up won £150 for their schools to spend on books.
