Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 7 August 2008

Age concern over a fine librarian

AS a retired library assistant in Camden, I used to work with Jill Banerjee (Forced to retire: the librarian with four decades of loyal service, July 17).
I can attest to Jill’s excellent, efficient and friendly demeanour with library users.
What an insult this is to her decades of dedication and, as your article suggests, ageism is one issue that leaps out.
If, as suggested, her face is no longer being used to promote Camden libraries, has she now become a non-person, Soviet-style?
I also understand that staff have been warned not to support her and told to keep quiet; all a far cry from the enlightened polices of an earlier Camden.
As for the statement that there were “strong business reasons for the decision…” you wold assume that Jill earns some great salary.
However, as John Mann said in your article: “Librarians don’t get paid a great deal of money.”
So what are these strong business reasons?
I hope Jill will continue to seek justice and, who knows, this might up in the European courts.
