Why do they want to take part of our courtyard?

Carrington’s Property Management have demanded that Camden Housing hand over a portion of the communal courtyard at Hastings House, WC1, situated behind Camden Town Hall.
Hastings House is home to 55 flats and over 100 council tenants. The land has been on lease to Camden Council and used as the communal courtyard for over 27 years, but Carrington’s now want it back and will not offer any fair deal for the lease of the land. Carrington’s have asked for £100,000 for a patch of land at the west of the courtyard, giving no specification as to what they want to do with the land.
Camden Housing officials have tried to negotiate with Carrington’s, offering £12,000 for the lease of the land, to bring it in line with the lease of Hastings House itself. But Carrington’s not only refuse to sell a lease for less than 999 years, but they also refuse to provide substantiated evidence of the enormous sum they are asking for.
Residents at Hastings House are enraged and disheartened as Camden have kept them out of the loop of negotiations, even though they knew residents were unhappy about the situation.
Camden has sent in EPS (the contracted maintenance service for Camden Housing) to rip out plants and trees, knock down a brickwork planter, pull down railings and remove bike racks.
Residents are trying to persuade Carrington’s to offer Camden a fair deal for the land so that they can continue to enjoy this vital outside space in cramped central London, but Carrington’s are not giving anything away to residents and local councillors who have made inquiries.
Indeed nobody at Carrington’s seems to know what is being talked about even though Camden provided the name of the agent in charge.
