Buckley’s century all in vain

Middlesex County Cricket League: Division One

Hampstead 286-5,
Southgate 268-8

HAMPSTEAD slipped into the bottom three on Saturday despite a well-crafted 111 by Brandon Buckley and seven wickets from Paul Weekes.
Hampstead, who were put into bat, have struggled to build up a telling advantage in recent weeks, so were desperate to put in a commanding display. Buckley obliged with great shots to score 111. And Weekes and Shaun Levy also put in respectable knocks of 68 and 31.
Hampstead declared with what looked a match-winning score of 286-5 off 62 overs.
Captain Weekes went on a one-man mission to end the game as he claimed seven wickets at the expense of just 56 runs. But, amazingly, Southgate survived the onslaught to end play on 268-8, taking four points courtesy of a faster run-rate.
A frustrated Hampstead side had to settle for a point.

Division Two

Acton 235 ao,
South Hampstead 184-9

SOUTH Hampstead are now 24 points behind league leaders North Middlesex after only managing to take a point against Acton on Saturday.
Acton batted first and set a testing target with 235 off 56 overs before the fall of their final wicket.
South Hampstead, who remain second in the table, struggled to build upon their early form and just about managed to hold on to their final wicket to steal a point, ending the afternoon on 184-9 off 44 overs.

Division Three

Hornsey 267-9,
Highgate 171 ao,

HIGHGATE suffered their third successive defeat on Saturday by 96 runs.

Having opted to field, Highgate’s attack shared the wickets with Tony Duckett claiming three, and Phil Brown, David Benton and Andrew Brown two each.
But a stunning knock of 116 from Sanjay Patel saw the visitors declare on 267-9 off 50 overs.
In reply, Highgate got off to a bad start, losing James Warburton and Matt Holly early on. Graeme Jenkins and Zac Curtis dug in against hostile bowling before Jenkins fell lbw to leave the home side struggling on 27-3.
Curtis and Benton built up a 50 partnership before Curtis was caught for a gritty 55.
Ponniah Vijendran added 21 but it was too little too late as Highgate slipped to fourth.
