Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 24 July 2008

Dedication

• FURTHER to the Edith Neville debate, I also worked there for many years.
It would be difficult to find a more hard-working staff, and that includes all support staff, many of whom have dedicated their working lives to the school. These days, perhaps, it is not fashionable to say that a school is “special” in the sense that people working in it are truly dedicated and caring.
Edith Neville inspires a loyalty from staff and community, and I cannot believe that the council seems to be riding roughshod over the wishes of that community.
I don’t see it mentioned that about 10 years ago the building “tilted” and the entire school was moved into another building temporarily. Not an easy achievement.
I was there and the school really needed rebuilding then.
I understand that Edith Neville is now top of a list to be rebuilt according to the school’s well thought out wishes, that many of the Frank Barnes children do not live in Camden, that Camden wants the Frank Barnes site for its own purposes, and a decision is timed to be given on the last day of term, which hardly seems reasonable.
Why can’t the money be given to Edith Neville to rebuild to the needs of the community the school serves? Surely the council must have another think, and not hold £10million as blackmail? There must be other possibilities for the children of Frank Barnes, especially as most of them live out of the borough. A school is not just a building. It is people who make a school what it is. When is the council going to listen?
