Pupils get tuned in to opera ahead of Albert Hall show

IF you thought the only music schoolchildren listen to features a boom-boom beat and a rapper, think again. Because as of next week youngsters from Fleet Primary School in Fleet Road, Gospel Oak, will be learning the strains of one of opera’s most famous pieces: Carmina Burana.
The rousing Bavarian masterpiece, written by Carl Orff in 1937, has been used in some of Hollywood’s most chilling blockbusters, and it looks set to be no less hardhitting from the mouths of babes when they perform at the Royal Albert Hall in November, alongside Barts choir and parents and teachers from Fleet.
n A 50-strong adult’s choir will also be performing at the concert under the baton of Ivor Setterfield. If you would like to take part, there is an initial workshop at Gospel Oak Methodist Church, Agincourt Road, on Saturday July 19 from 10am-12, with rehearsals commencing in September. No formal experience is required.
