Playwright dedicates opening night to dad

WRITER Amy Rosenthal raised thousands of pounds for a rare cancer charity when she hosted a glittering gala night for her latest play in Swiss Cottage.
The Belsize Park playwright dedicated On the Rocks, which runs at the Hampstead Theatre 'til July 26, to the memory of her famous screenwriter father, Jack Rosenthal, who died from blood cancer myeloma in 2004.
She dedicated all proceeds from last Thursday’s sell-out show to the Myeloma UK charity, telling the audience: “We didn’t know about Myeloma UK when my dad was diagnosed. I wish we had because we didn’t know enough to make those terrifying choices.”
She was joined on stage by her mother, the comedienne Maureen Lipman, who drew raffle prizes including a premier dinner cruise for two on the Thames.
Ms Lipman spoke of her mother’s anxiety about the critical reaction to Amy’s play, her first for six years.
“It took me 23 hours to give birth to Amy, and yet nothing was as bad as waiting for the reviews of her play,” she said.
