Hammer time! Flick gets to work on pool refurb

IT will cost at least £25.3 million to restore it to its former glory – so the champagne flowing at a special party at the Kentish Town Baths on Monday night represented little more than a drop in the swimming pool.
One of Camden’s most expensive – and eagerly-awaited – projects is finally underway.
The reception at the baths in Prince of Wales Road was held as Camden handed the building over to contractors for refurbishment. The council plans to retain two main pools and a learner pool in the one of the only efforts to restore a Victorian swimming pool in the country.
Liberal Democrat leisure chief Councillor Flick Rea swung a sledgehammer at an internal wall to kick-start the work.
She said: “This is the most exciting project I have ever ever been involved with… apart from maybe the birth of my children. No other local authority is attempting a project like this.”
The pool is due to reopen in 2010.
