Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 26 June 2008

No plans for a sell-off

• CONTRARY to the article and comment you carried (Camden Centre sell off? June 19), the council has no plans to sell off the Camden Centre.
The reality is quite the opposite. We want to retain ownership and invest to create a one-stop shop with a full range of front-line services. People will be able to drop in and renew their parking permit, enquire about a planning application or pay a council bill – all under one roof.
Unfortunately the internal condition of the centre is far from satisfactory and this is reflected in the number of bookings it gets. But we recognise the history of the Camden Centre and any refit will of course take full account of the fact it is a listed building.
Should the plans for redevelopment be approved, we will be able to honour all bookings that have been made for the Camden Centre. We will also offer support to regular users to help them find alternative facilities to suit their needs.
Our proposed changes to the Camden Centre and the Town Hall Extension are about making sure King’s Cross has the modern facilities we need to provide the standard of service residents expect. To do nothing would be negligent.
