Doing the honours…

• JOHN Gulliver looks forward to the day when “instead of the Queen, a publicly elected body hands out awards” (June 19).
Well, he’ll be pleased to know that although the Queen – or a representative – does the “handing out”, the recipients of most awards, including the Companion of the Order of the Bath, are already chosen by an elected body – HM government. And he is welcomed to put forward his suggestions for honours by writing to them.
