Hampstead hit mid-table as bats lose their edge
Middlesex County Cricket League: Division One
Hampstead 198 ao, Finchley 201-
HAMPSTEAD were left languishing in mid-table after their second consecutive defeat, by an agonising one-wicket away. Hampstead got off to the worst possible start when star batsman Brandon Buckley fell to only the second ball of the innings. Imraan Mohammed added a vital knock of 32, while Mohammed Akhtar carved out a patient half-century. But Hampstead were eventually bundled out for 198 in the 61st over.
Where the Hampstead batsmen have been failing, the bowlers have been almost heroic. Zac Khan struck twice in the first over to leave Finchley reeling on none for two.
Finchley regrouped and passed 100 before losing their next wicket, which was well claimed by skipper Paul Weekes. The result remained in the balance until the very end. But it wasn’t to be Hampstead’s day as Finchley managed a winning score of 201-9.
Division Two
S Hampstead 219 ao, Richmond 220-7
SOUTH Hampstead suffered their second defeat this season on Saturday when they were beaten by three wickets at home. Having been put in to bat, Fahad Mehboob was the pick of the batsman as he hit 56 to help lead South Hampstead to 219 runs before the fall of their final wicket. But the visitors showed great composure to put on a disciplined display, posting a winning score of 220-7 thanks to a man-of-the-match performance from Nick Armstrong.
Division Three
Uxbridge 211 ao, Highgate 170-9
HIGHGATE were knocked off of top spot on Saturday when they were held to a draw at home. Starting their attack from the field, Tony Duckett and Phil Brown continued their impressive form with some incisive seam and swing bowling, using the damp conditions well, to limit Uxbridge to two an over. Duckett got the breakthrough to make it 47-1. Skipper Dave Benton brought himself in to the attack and immediately took a wicket to leave the visitors on 92-2. But it was the bowling of Craig Gourlay that really proved the difference as he claimed 4-60 to help restrict Uxbridge to 211.
In reply, opener Jake Sharland struggled to score of 31 as Highgate failed to find any telling consistency. Benton and Gourlay survived some tense moments to take Highgate towards the 150 mark before Benton fell for 34. In the end Highgate could only manage 170-9 from 44 overs, but did manage to earn four points for the winning draw courtesy of their faster run-rate.
