Tricky summersaults lead to a triple injury!
CAMDEN’S Trampolining Club discovered there was some truth to the phrase “bad things always happen in threes” on Saturday when three of their members injured themselves while competing in a tournament.
Taking part in the London-wide Youth Games on Saturday, the youngsters became better acquainted with the saying “what goes up must come down” than they had perhaps bargained for, when three-quarters of the team twisted their ankles.
Acland Burghley pupil Denis McFadden, 13, who ended up being rushed to hospital from the Redbridge Leisure Centre with a suspected broken leg, is still hobbling around on crutches. Last year he fractured his arm competing.
But the group can see the funny side. Reflecting on what must be the unluckiest day in their history, the team – and their irrepressible coach Rohan Nichol – can’t help but laugh.
Admitting their injury tally became the talk of the town on Saturday, Mr Nichol said: “The organisers joked that all we needed was for one more to twist their ankle and we’d have a full house. It is most unusual to have one club get three injuries – it’s one of those odd occurrences – it’s just fate.”
Picking up three injuries in one day was about as unlucky as it gets, said Denis, Camden’s under-15 reigning male trampolining competitor. “It’s weird all three people got the same thing. In other competitions nobody would get one and we got three,” he added.
But despite being brought down to earth with a thud, the team can be proud of coming 14th out of 33 boroughs. “I think they’re wicked,” said Mr Nichol. “They showed a level of maturity and sportsmanship above and beyond what you’d expect. A lot of teams would have fallen apart – once they knew they weren’t going to win – but they were concerned about each other.”
Having achieved 11th place in last year’s rankings, Mr Nichol’s goal is to see his team hit single figures in the competition next summer.
