Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 19 June 2008

Craft market bombshell

• I AM a trader of six years’ standing with a stall in the Hampstead Community Market. I have this week received a letter from Richard Weaver telling me it is no longer to be available on Saturdays as a craft market.
This has been a well-loved institution in Hampstead Village for a long time.
One of my fellow traders has had her antique jewellery stall for 40 years and is a well known figure locally.
We are all devastated at having received this notice with no warning.
And what is the market going to be used for? Food. Food, when there are a great many food shops in Hampstead, Even a Tesco! How many food shops do we need?
Perhaps the most dismaying aspect of all this is that we have been kept totally in the dark.
No chance to seek alternative spaces when there are only four weeks left before they close.
Hampstead will have nothing of this kind now. We who have our regular customers will lose not only our livelihood but our friends.
Surely the profit motive should not be the only reason for such endeavours?
