Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 5 June 2008

Praise Elgin

• CHRISTOPHER Price calls for the return of the Elgin Marbles to Greece and speaks of “imperial loot” and “the ethical issue of returning stolen objects to their rightful owners” (Now there’s really no excuse for holding on to ‘our’ marbles, May 29).
At a time when Greece was still part of the Ottoman Empire and what remained of its classical heritage frequently ended up in the lime kilns for mortar, Elgin was allowed to remove the sculptures.
By doing so he ensured that Greek art began to receive the recognition and care it deserved – and his legacy should now remain proudly where it is.
