Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Wardens at a stretch?

• PLANS for the street warden service laid out by the Tory/Lib Dem council have been met with anger from King’s Cross residents who are worried that the cut to their service will herald a return to the bad old days for the local area.
A restricted consultation process, with few allowed to contribute, has only added to the fear that this decision is being based on finances rather than what is best for local people.
The “cluster” approach recommended in the report, due to go to the executive yesterday (Wednesday) is a poorly disguised attempt to stretch current resources across the borough without regard to concerns that the service will be at breaking point.
Stretching the wardens over large areas of the borough and moving them around every few months will break the links between the wardens and their patch and prevent them from having the time to build positive relationships with local residents, young people and community groups both of which have been vital to their current success.
Concerns that crime is simply not a priority for the Town Hall are exacerbated by the downgrading of the previously prestigious community safety portfolio into a mere add-on to a much larger and unwieldy brief.
We urge the new executive member to rethink on the street wardens plan and put together proposals which would build on rather than dismantle the excellent work they’ve done in King’s Cross.
