TfL has brought about bus revolution
• COUNCILLOR Paul Braithwaite portrays Transport for London (TfL) as a “dinosaur” without redeeming features (Transport wake-up, May 8).
I would agree there are some aspects of the organisation that need reform.
But let us not forget that this organisation was created from nothing in 2000 and has brought about a total revolution in bus services in London, as well as a massive improvement in the infrastructure of the Underground, bringing both services into the 21st century.
It has overseen the first congestion charge ever introduced, and has used the money collected to very good effect in improving public transport.
Locally, it is TfL cash this very year that has enabled the work on the canopy in Kentish Town Road, as well as improvements to the London Cycle Network, increased 20mph schemes to enhance road safety, and many other schemes for the benefit of Camden residents. Between 2004 and 2008, Camden has enjoyed £5 million of funding from TfL.
Now is not the time to rewrite history.
TfL has achieved a lot, and Camden has benefited.
Let’s work together to ensure we get as much benefit in the future, especially from the walking and cycling plans that were mooted by the previous mayor. We don’t want those disappearing to outer London, do we?
