Life in the fast lane as swim stars turn in outstanding times
FLYING Freddie Cornwall broke two Anaconda records at the weekend when he helped the swimming club (pictured) climb to third in the Junior Speedo League.
Competing in the latest meet in Braintree, Essex, the nine-year-old speedster took first place in the 25m freestyle with a time of 15.95 seconds, taking 0.21 of a second off the record, which had stood for 22 years.
Freddie followed up his premier pool performance with a clear win in the 25m butterfly, setting another new mark of 17.42 secs. Overall Anaconda’s nine-year-old swimmers were in outstanding form. Iona Ocak won the girls’ 25m freestyle in a personal best time of 18.85 secs, while team-mate Olivia Howe won the girls’ 25m breaststroke in 23.51. The girls’ relay team of Ocak, Howe, Olivia Warwick and Maisie Parker also won their freestyle event.
The gold rush continued with Jake Usher, 11, winning the 50m freestyle with a time of 34.45 secs.
Elsewhere Verity Hayes, Thomas Dwyer, Nina Morris-Evans, Fred Celul, Morgan Mockler, Maisie Parker, Padraig Lynch, Aimee-Rose Nahal and Josh Steimert all won silver medals.
Swiss Cottage trio poised for big time
THREE Camden Swiss Cottage swimmers are preparing to compete at the highest level after achieving national qualifying times.
Alex Peake became the youngest swim star to represent Camden in the National Age Groups when he won the 200m breaststroke in a stunning time of 2:53.97 at the Coventry Open Meet.
The talented 12-year-old also won gold in the 50m butterfly and the 50m and 100m breaststroke before clinching bronze in the 100m freestyle.
Club-mates Joel Sands, 15, and Edward Graham, 14, hit their national times at the London Region Distance Meet, which was held in Aldershot.
Sands recorded a personal best in his 800m event, while Graham proved fast enough over the first 800m of his 1500m freestyle race.
Triumphant trio Alex, Joel and Edward will now join team-mates Devon Robins, Harry Needs, Bogac Ayhan, Alex Mackay, Felix Samuels and Ed Walsh, a total of nine Camden Swiss Cottage swimmers competing at the national grade. |
