Eco-fears could see canteens going veggie

PROPOSALS to cut meat and dairy products from the Camden Council’s canteen menu have been criticised by the UK meat industry.
Liberal Democrat councillor Alexis Rowell, known as the “eco-warrior” put forward the idea to set an example to the rest of the borough. He said he is concerned about the energy used by livestock farming.
But Richard Lowe, chief executive of the Meat and Livestock Commission, said in a letter to Lib Dem council leader Keith Moffitt: “We are taken aback by this idea in view of the stated national positions of both the Liberal Democrat and Conservative parties on support for British agriculture. We cannot believe that councillors would back such a proposal.”
Cllr Moffitt said the idea had been suggested but was not council policy. Cllr Rowell’s recommendations will be discussed by senior councillors next month.
