Without funding, this community centre will close
• CASTLEHAVEN community centre reported (Crime rise fears, March 27) that it had lost half of its council funding for youth work programmes.
Queen’s Crescent community centre has been refused any funding from the council for its youth activities. This centre runs activities to encourage young people to take part in further education, incåçrease employment prospects, and to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour in the area. The centre works very hard, year on year, fundraising to sustain and develop young people’s activities at a time when they are most at risk of offending.
The decision to cut this funding clearly needs to be looked at again by the council. Without council funding the community centre will be forced to close its youth programme. Young people need hope, support, encouragement and opportunities to develop and enhance their life skills.
