Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 20 March 2008

Does anybody care about these beautiful trees?

• SO the City of London which “looks after” Hampstead Heath and Whitestone Pond is planning to cut down or mutilate (‘pruning’) more trees and shrubs (Splashing out on pond, March 13).
The City of London has already wrecked the vegetation around the fishing pond – you can go there any time to admire the debris. Recently, they have demolished a large clump of trees near the top of Parliament Hill. Hampstead Heath should be in the hands of conservationists not park keepers.
But then what will Camden Council have to say about it?
Judging by the zeal they display in demolishing street trees, they aren’t going to object.
Most likely they will follow the example of the overground railway people who have cut down most of the greenery on the railway properties near Gospel Oak station, adjacent to the Heath.
Does anyone care about trees round here or think them beautiful?
Or are they just ‘blocking views’, as stated in your article.
