Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 20 March 2008

They should keep their word and reopen the Belsize branch

• WE have a different version of events from that presented in Post Office Ltd’s letter (March 13) in which he makes a convenient scapegoat of Minesh Patel.
We would invite PO Ltd once again to keep their promise of 2004, and reopen our central Post Office on Haverstock Hill, which PO Ltd closed “temp-orarily” on March 22, 2004, and which is not part of the current closure list.
We would also like to thank Mr Patel for persevering against many difficulties in his attempt to provide an improved public service for his numerous customers in Belsize Park by extending his shop to accommodate a post office.
One omission to the flattering self-portrait of PO Ltd by Craig Tuthill, Regional Development Manager PO Ltd, is to explain to the public the reason why Mr Patel was the only applicant in four years.
Why? Would it not be the job of “regional managers” to find and seek many suitable applicants to compete for such a desirable job vacancy, over so long a period? Or could it be that PO Ltd was dragging its feet for four years for reasons of its own?
Glenda Jackson MP has recently remarked to Susan Hopkins, senior external relations manager, PO Ltd: “I do not think it is acceptable that Belsize should lose all three of its post offices in the space of two years. Only a few months ago I was assured that Royal Mail were still committed to finding suitable premises for a post office on Haverstock Hill and were actively pursuing a possible venue.
“The closure of the Haverstock Hill Post Office [2004] has had a considerable impact on not only the residents, but businesses in this area, and has clearly exacerbated queues and led to an inadequate service for existing customers at the Hampstead Village and Finchley Road post offices.”
We support that, and look forward to immediate positive action from PO Ltd to keep their word and reopen our central Belsize post office.
