Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 13 March 2008

Praise for a real fair cop

• MANY readers will have been heartened by Abdul Salam’s letter (March 6) in which he praised the sensitive way in which a police officer stopped him under the Terrorism Act when he was taking some amateur photos in St Pancras Way.
This is a real credit to the quality of our local policing and to this officer from Albany Street. Abdul Salam’s experience reminded me that many years ago a couple of detective officers challenged me, as they felt sure I was up to no good knocking on doors in leafy Netherhall Gardens one afternoon.
Of course, I fully realise that I am much less likely to be stopped by the police than young men, especially those from visible minorities. Most people I suspect understand the necessity for the use of stop and search as long as it forms part of an intelligent, community-based approach to policing.
Well done to Abdul Salam.
CLLR ANDREW MARSHALL
Deputy Leader of the Council and Leader of the Conservative Group, Swiss Cottage Ward
