Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 6 March 2008

Fight for the money

• YOU reported how council homes were sold for millions of pounds more than expected.
Councillor Chris Naylor said in his letter (February 28) that the council needs the money for repairs.
I remember when I was growing up in Camden in the 1970s Camden Council took pride in buying up street properties and turning them into council homes that everyone could afford.
Back in the day, when Ken Livingstone was chair of housing in Camden, they also bought land like Tolmers Square from private developers and built council housing.
Now the council is selling these properties back to the speculators, which mean that our kids have no chance of ever living in Camden unless it is in overcrowding.
Everyone concerned should be ashamed of themselves.
Cllr Naylor and the Liberal Democrats claim to disagree with the government, but they don’t have the bottle to stand up and fight for the money we need.
“Red” Ken seems to have turned blue these days.
Caroline Flint, the new housing minister, says people can only get council housing if they get a job.
That is why I am proud to have been selected as a candidate for Respect (The Left List) to stand for the Greater London Authority, because I think it is urgent to put some principles back into politics.
