‘One of the noblest of streets’
• CAMDEN Council gave permission for redevelopment as flats of Nos 3, 5 & 7 Fitzjohn’s Avenue with retention of the facades.
Demolition has recently happened, girders were fitted to retain the facades but sadly Nos 5 & 7 have collapsed.
Will anyone be prosecuted?
These houses are in the Fitzjohns/Netherhall conservation area designated by Camden.
As their statement quotes, the American Harpers magazine in 1883 called it “one of the noblest streets in the world.”
The author Barrat in 1912 wrote “the houses were considered very wonderful”.
As also noted in the statement, the area has a rich variety of architectural details; I photographed many as I showed in my illustrated article in 2001 Camden History Review and exhibited at the Holborn Library [reported in January 2004].
Sadly I did not take pictures of these three houses; now all that can be seen of interest above the hoarding is one triangular porch with incised and relief decoration.
I hope that Camden had an adequate photographic survey before the demolition and that there will eventually be a satisfactory outcome.
