Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 6 March 2008

No shifting the blame on this loss of projects £10m

• I WAS delighted last December when the government promised Camden Council almost £10 million to use for 50 much-needed projects.
Now I am astonished to discover that this money has been snatched back because the government says that it got its sums wrong.
I am truly appalled. That money would have been put towards a new “working neighbour-hoods fund” for use in some of the neediest areas. Now the Department for Communities and Local Government claims to have used incorrect data when announcing the amount of money Camden could expect.
Why were incorrect data lying around where someone could get his hands on them to use in vital calculations?
Is this even true?
I wonder whether a Labour government is just not willing to help a Liberal Democrat/ Conservative council to do the best possible for residents. Whatever the explanation, Camden has had to take £1 million from its own reserves to cover the immediate shortfall in funding, and may have to find £9 million more economies over the next three years. It is not as if Camden is profligate with its money.
It recently received full marks form the National Audit office for its financial management. By contrast the government seems to be unable to find the correct data or to get much else right.
Please do not let Labour supporters try to shift the blame for their government’s blunders onto the local administration.
