Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 6 March 2008

Personal services

• ALL well and good (Behind massage parlour front, the trafficked women forced to sell sex, February 28), you are quite right to expose the “massage parlours” and the council’s complicity in prostitution.
However, the New Journal carries ads for “personal services” and even has a special section on its website which leaves little to the imagination.
In December, a number of local newspapers decided to stop taking such adverts. Please uphold the values you so regularly espouse in your leader column and stop taking these ads.
Ruairi McAleese
Hawley Road, NW1

Exploited

• I WAS deeply concerned by the news that the council makes money in licences from saunas which the police consider to be fronts for prostitution.
From your report there seems to be confusion between the council and the police on this matter, which is very serious. When I think of all the other enforcement debates that regularly appear in the pages of the New Journal, like those around restaurant opening hours, or outdoor smoking areas, I can’t understand why this issue isn’t much higher up the agenda.
Tolerating the situation as it stands means accepting the appalling exploitation and abuse of many trafficked, coerced and vulnerable women.
Will the council commit to stop tolerating prostitution in our borough, and develop a strategy to help trafficked women?
