Candidates and bikes
• THAT Boris Johnson is known as a cyclist has, under the law of unforeseen consequences, seemingly had a dramatic effect on mayor Ken Livingstone.
He has announced a huge new commitment to cycling which should be delivered whichever candidate wins in May. It’s taken Ken two terms to realise which way the wind is blowing!
Camden is the spearhead of the Paris-type Velib bike rental scheme and we will be the focal point for the London introduction within a couple of years. We will be at the top of the list in bidding for Transport for London money for at least of couple of the expensive new radial cycling corridors intended to make commuting much safer through vastly improved cycling infrastructure.
What was announced by the mayor was the prospect of a £500 million 10-year investment in cycling and Camden is pro-active in proposing a groundbreaking programme of schemes for both cyclists and pedestrians. There is a real commitment by the joint administration in Camden to deliver on carbon reduction and the climate change agenda, with promoting walking and cycling as a top priority. Meanwhile, our government proceeds with its determination to build a third runway at Heathrow and to pollute Camden’s residents from above, but that’s a different story.
