Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 14 February 2008

Capital’s low emission zone is there to save lives

• WE should all support Ken Livingstone’s newly-launched low emission zone.
One thousand Londoners die of pollution-related illnesses every year and Ken’s initiative will help the fight to reduce this terrible statistic. The zone has received backing from Asthma UK and the British Lung Foundation.
Andrew Ross, NW5

• I WANT to put to you the case for the low emission zone recently launched by Ken Livingstone.
The facts are being blurred and are allowing the scheme’s critics to exploit a general lack of information. One million people live in the area covered by the zone, one million people who will have better health because of it.
These lorries put out 40 times more pollution than a normal car, the goods depots should be out of town, and goods should be on the rails not on the streets.
This is a policy that will make people’s lives better and a real move against global warming as the government stalls and Boris Johnson shows himself to be as reactionary as Stephen Norris was before the congestion charge.
Johnson’s campaign website says that he supports the zone but at the same time, he attacked it, calling it “the most punitive, draconian fining regime in the whole of Europe.”
Tom TaborI
Fortess Road, NW5
