Haymer outpunched in The Return

FORMER St Pancras amateur star Peter Haymer failed in his bid to capture the British Light-Heavyweight title on Friday when he was knocked out by Portsmouth’s Tony Oakey at the York Hall in Bethnal Green.
Haymer stepped between the ropes looking for a repeat of his performance that saw him controversially beat Oakey for the English title back in 2005.
But in a fight billed as ‘The Return’, it was Oakey who punched his way to victory when he sent Haymer crashing to the canvas with a ferocious left-hook in the ninth round.
There was better news for former club mate John McDermott who was in commanding form as he outboxed Russia’s Daniel Peret over six, three-minute rounds. The hard-hitting heavyweight was in fierce form as he powered his way to a 59-55 points victory.
McDermott is now preparing to fight Birmingham’s Pele Reid for the British Heavyweight title in April.
In an action-packed show, there was disappointment for Finchley’s Tony Salam, who was counted out in the sixth round of his scheduled eight round Light-Heavyweight contest against Liverpool’s
Courtney Fry.
