Adebayor is a ‘dream striker’

Wenger heaps praise on Togolese goal machine’s towering performance

ARSENE Wenger has heaped praise on Togolese goal-machine Emmanuel Adebayor as the race for the Premier League title hots up.
The Arsenal boss could barely control himself after another towering performance from the 22-year-old striker on Tuesday night helped inspire the Gunners to a 3-1 victory over Newcastle.
“He is the striker you dream to have,” Wenger said. “Adebayor has many assets for a striker – he is mobile, he is tall and has quick feet. He can score with his feet, in the air and on crosses with headers. He is a generous type of player and he works for the team.”
With Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Eboue away at the African Nations tournament, Wenger added he was “very glad” Togo did not qualify.
Adebayor was at times oafish and cumbersome last season, with just 12 goals in all competitions. But the centre forward has been a revelation this season, netting nine times in seven consecutive games to take his personal tally to 19 goals for the campaign so far.
With 16 goals in the league, he is just one strike behind Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo in the race to be this season’s top goal scorer.
Meanwhile Arsenal fans will be delighted with the news that Abou Diaby has signed a new long-term contract at Arsenal, which will keep him at the Emirates stadium until 2012.
The 21-year-old French midfielder, who signed from Auxerre in January 2006, played his 55th game for the Gunners in Tuesday’s 3-0 win over Newcastle.
Wenger is hoping
that fellow midfielder Matthieu Flamini, who is out of contract in the summer, will also commit his future to the club within the next couple of days.
