Hampstead Town Hall board urged to resign

THE trust that runs the Hampstead Town Hall should resign immediately to give the venue a fresh start, the Heath and Hampstead Society has said.
The Society’s chairman, Tony Hillier, is calling on the trustees to step aside after a two-year spat over the management and direction of the charity-run Victorian venue in Belsize Park.
Last year the trust’s chief executive, Dr Alan Tomkins, stepped down and has yet to be replaced. New trustees – including representatives from performing arts group Interchange, who use the building – have been taken on to give the group a new direction.
But Mr Hillier says the changes have not gone far enough, and the board saying that it should continue to run the venue simply because it had the necessary experience was not acceptable.
He says: “Just having experience is no guarantee of good management.” He welcomes assurances from the new trustees that they intend to take forward the original vision for the Town Hall in an open and accountable way but adds: “This is the vision the residents of Hampstead want to see inspiring a new chief executive, and a completely new board must be a continuing part of that process.”
