Ignoring the plight of leaseholders and tenants
• I SUPPORT the latest push to make the case to government for direct investment in Camden’s council housing stock.
I hope it is successful. But I fear these pleas will once again fall on deaf ears.
The Labour governments – under Gordon Brown and Tony Blair – have repeatedly ignored the plight of Camden’s council tenants and leaseholders.
They keep pressing the council to meet the “Decent Homes Standard” while starving us of the cash needed to achieve it.
They are punishing residents who voted against arms-length management of their estates.
That is not democratic and it is not fair.
Given this backdrop, I think the council is right to work with residents to explore alternative ways to access the money that is needed.
We have to do something to address the leaking roofs and the draughty windows.
We cannot let council housing fall further into disrepair while the Labour Party plays political games.
