Chappelow’s Grade-II listed ramshackle home

THE body of Allan Chappelow, 86, was found at his Hampstead home in 2006.
His Grade-II listed house in Downshire Hill, on English Heritage’s at-risk register because of its ramshackle state, was Mr Chappelow’s family home. His father, an antiques dealer, had left it to him on his death and the victim, who never married, had gradually allowed it to fall into a state of disrepair. It still lies empty, but was recently sold to developers for £4.1 million.
Mr Chappelow, a keen amateur photographer, met George Bernard Shaw in the 1940s after requesting permission to take his portrait. He went on to write two books on his life.
