Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 17 January 2008

Politics of the ponds

• AS chair of the Kenwood Ladies Pond Association I wish to respond to Michael Andrew, who was irritated that he was not permitted to attend the ladies pond swim on January 1 (Deep trouble after going to watch the pond ladies, January 10).
We have nothing but gratitude to the male swimmers, gracious enough to permit us to swim in their pond if circumstances cause the closure of the ladies pond.
It is also recognised that were the men’s pond to be closed we would reciprocate.
I am sorry that he was misinformed about the nature of the new year swim at the ladies pond.
The Christmas Day swim is a public mixed competitive event and is organised by the lifeguards. It has, however, been traditional that the Kenwood Ladies Pond Association host a New Year’s Day swim for our members and for other women swimmers.
Appreciating the immensely warm response given to us if we have to swim at the men’s pond, we are hoping to invite men’s pond swimmers to swim and take breakfast at the ladies pond at some specified day in the spring.
But the New Year’s Day swim is seen by almost all of our members as a day to celebrate our pond, which is, as you are aware, one of the rare places that is for women only.
Jane Shallice
Chair KLPA, N8
