Tribute to man found dead in street disappears

THIEVES have stolen floral tributes left by grieving loved ones in the Camden Town street where a carpenter was fatally injured in mysterious circumstances.
Flowers were left this weekend outside the Lock Tavern in Chalk Farm Road by the family of Kevin Jessup, who was found in the street with head injuries at 7am on the Friday before Christmas.
But the tribute to Mr Jessup, who died at the Royal Free Hospital on December 22, had disappeared 48 hours later, adding to both the mystery of his death and the distress of his family.
A family member said on Monday: “It was really hard and extremely emotional for us to lay those flowers because we are all just devastated. There were quite a few bouquets of flowers and cards from us to him.
“When we heard they had gone we were very, very upset.”
The string tying the bouquets to a bollard in Chalk Farm Road had been cut and the flowers and cards completely removed by Sunday morning.
Police have advised the family not to lay any more flowers.
Mr Jessup was found unconscious on the pavement at dawn on December 21 and only briefly recovered consciousness before dying at the Royal Free the next day.
Police have officially treated his death as suspicious, but, despite door-to-door enquiries and the arrest of a 21-year-old Camden Town man on suspicion of murder, the circumstances leading up to his injury remain uncertain.
Detectives are piecing together Mr Jessup’s movements after he was seen in the Twelve Pins pub in Finsbury Park, 10 hours before his body was found.
Camden police have checked with the council to ensure that the flowers were not removed in error and are now making enquiries in the area, a Met spokeswoman said on Monday.
She added: “This is very distressing for the family and we would ask that anyone who has any information should get in touch with us.”
