Camden New Journal - Letters to the Editor
Published: 10 January 2008

A sad start to new year

• JANE Schopflin’s death is a very sad start to the new year and my colleagues and I extend our condolences to her family.
Jane became a councillor in the same year as me, but only in retrospect do I see the particular challenges she faced and the way in which she rose to those challenges. She showed how important rigorous scrutiny can be, both in opposition over 16 years and more recently as part of the majority. She cared a great deal for people and the human consequences of what local government does, but she combined that with a toughness in seeking more efficient services and better use of public money. Jane had a lovely sense of humour and she will be missed.
Cllr ANDREW MARSHALL
Deputy Leader of the Council Swiss Cottage Ward
