Ofsted report awards top marks to ‘outstanding’ fledgling school
Inspectors praise ‘positive atmosphere’ and ‘clear vision’ of Clerkenwell primary
SCHOOL inspectors have returned a glowing report across the board for a fledgling Clerkenwell primary school.
In a rare display of unmitigated praise, Ofsted officials graded Christopher Hatton Primary School in Laystall Street as “outstanding” in all areas – the highest attainable rating.
They commended the “exceptional” achievements of the pupils, the “very positive atmosphere of close teamwork” throughout the school and the “outstanding provision” of its teachers.
The school is less than 15 years old, with English spoken as a second language by more than two thirds of its pupils, yet inspectors could not fault the incredibly high standard of teaching and support which ensured that children reached skill levels “significantly above the national average” year after year.
Pupils who struggled to learn were given extra support while those that excelled could pursue interesting programmes such as regular mathematics masterclasses and the opportunity to have their plays performed by professional actors at the Hampstead Theatre.
Inspectors noted the “clear vision to squeeze the best out of adults and pupils”, with great care paid to pupils’ development in all fields, including exercise, nutrition and taking responsibility.
“The relationships are highly positive and purposeful, and classrooms are a hive of activity,” the report added.
Headteacher Gwen Lee said: “We are delighted with the report which reflects the skill and dedication of an exceptional team. Our aim is to create responsible, resilient and resourceful pupils who really enjoy learning.
“Our next task is to raise the significant funding required to extend and improve our playground to ensure our outdoor environment matches the standards inside the school.”
Councillor Andrew Mennear, Camden Council’s Executive Member for Schools, said: “Christopher Hatton can certainly be proud of the results of this inspection.
