Hens need protection

• IT is difficult to feel sympathy for the birdman of Kentish Town (Was it the fox that done it? December 20) who complains of the loss of his domestic fowl from his garden.
Has he never heard the expression “chickens come home to roost”?
Caging hens on the ground in gardens is an invitation to predators, thieves or vandals. Hens were meant to be kept in secure hen houses where they can roost high up for safety at night.
It is all too easy to blame foxes for everything but, in this case, I blame the hen keeper for not knowing that domestic birds need protection as well as affection
