Height of madness?
• WITH reference to the story (A history of low-flying aircraft, December 6) I have established Hampstead reaches a height of 443ft above the Thames.
To this elevation one may add 100ft for the radio mast on the Heights. Embattled Jack Straw’s Castle is said to be the highest pub in London.
Some might see it as a form of insanity for a government wilfully to arrange for aircraft to take off up a hill, towards an obstacle some 550ft in height.
Perhaps the government merely failed to consult an Ordnance Survey map, and thought Hampstead flat.
If aircraft are and will be “flying too low and not maintaining the legally required height” then LBC Town Hall ought to consider installing some form of aircraft monitoring station near the castle.
This could issue the aerial equivalent of parking tickets (low flying tickets) of £10,000 per transgression to every offending airline, as well as instantly file real-time complaints with air traffic control.
