Help for a school to get budget on track

• FOLLOWING your report (Cash crisis in schools, December 13) I’d like to explain to your readers the process of how schools funding works.
Firstly, and most importantly, Camden is committed to supporting all of its schools to ensure children and young people across the borough receive the best possible education and start in life.
Schools funding comes from central government and is distributed to schools by the council using a formula that is mainly based on pupil numbers.
Schools have the responsibility for managing their own budgets and staffing through their headteachers and governing bodies, who will decide how their funding should be best spent.
Occasionally schools can find themselves in financial difficulty through having a deficit budget, which means they owe the local authority money.
If this happens Camden Council can offer a package of support to help a school get its budget back on track.
In such a case, we would first ensure that the school has a robust action plan in place to repay what they owe within three years.
If so Camden can approve a deficit budget.
At the same time we offer as much support as a school needs in preparing its recovery plan and ensuring that it is working.
Working closely with the school, we can also, if needed, provide additional training for governors and staff, which could include advice on staffing structures or purchasing of services.
The overarching aim is to ensure schools have the support and challenge they need to promote high standards of educational attainment for all pupils and students.

Executive Member for Schools
