Beware cut-and-run thieves, says shopper

SHOPPER Jean Watson had just picked up her pension and winter fuel allowance when thieves struck in Camden Town – by slashing open her shopping trolley when her back was turned.
Mrs Watson, 67, was shopping at Marks and Spencer in Camden High Street, last Wednesday, moments after leaving Camden Town Post Office, when her canvas shopping trolley was cut open and her purse containing £200 taken.
The Oakley Square resident is warning other shoppers to be alert. She said: “I am a very aware person and never carry a handbag because I know they can snatch them. But I did think my purse would be safe because there was no way of getting at it without lifting off the shopping basket and going into my trolley.
“They just slit it open. They must have seen me in the Post Office and known where it was.”
Chief Inspector Taylor Wilson, of Camden Town police, said that cutting open shopping bags was an old-fashioned criminal technique he had not seen in high- street shops recently.
“It is a technique that used to happen in markets but it is a new one on me here,” he added. “We have had some success in bringing down theft in and from shops generally in Camden Town but the best advice is still to be vigilant and ensure you do not leave your bag unattended.”
