Mayor pays tribute to New Year’s honours recipients at the Town Hall
THE great and the exceptional of Camden turned up to a special Town Hall bash on Tuesday to celebrate being named in the New Year’s Honours List.
Those congratulated by Camden Mayor Councillor Dawn Somper included The Daily Mail’s Dame Ann Leslie, for services to journalism. Meanwhile, possibly Camden’s longest-serving teacher was given an MBE for services to education. Rosemary Rice, from Kentish Town Church of England school in Islip Street, said “the love of the children” kept her going.
Unusually, two people stepped forward for a joint-MBE for services to children and families. Foster parents John and Moira Doneo have brought up eight children of their own and more than 300 foster children.
Biomedic Professor Mike Wren from University College London Hospital in Euston was also awarded an MBE in January. “I was very surprised to be honoured,” he said. “There aren’t many awards given to
biomedical scientists – you could count
them on one hand.”
Others given certificates by the Mayor were David Nasmith-Miller, awarded an MBE for services to police; Professor Jonathan Drori, awarded a CBE for services to culture, media and sport; and businessman Edward Posey, honoured with an OBE for services to his environment charity the Gaia Foundation.
