Indie pub’s hamper night crammed with classical goodies

MANY a VIP has passed through the backstage doors of the Dublin Castle pub in Camden Town. The odd instrument has also crossed the threshold from time to time.
But on December 16 something completely new is coming to the Parkway bar – a baby grand piano.
The Dublin’s first classical performance is in aid of a good cause – the Camden New Journal Christmas hamper fund.
This year, Henry Conlon, whose family has run the pub for decades, wanted to do something different for the appeal, which raises money to help the less well-off, the elderly and the unwell at Christmas.
So he roped in his friend and one-time bar worker, Aglaia Tarantino, an award-winning classical pianist, and opera singer Caterina Argese, a household name in her native Italy.
Ms Tarantino is excited about the invitation to break the indie mould at the Dublin. “It was my dream to bring classical music to the Dublin Castle,” she said. “It’s great – there are not so many classical venues in Camden. Hopefully, it’s the start of future classical collaborations.”
Mr Conlon – who is funding the piano hire – expects a slightly more sophisticated and mature audience for the classical gig. “It’s going to be something very different – there’s nothing else like it in Camden this Christmas,” he said. “So if you want to romance your loved one while raising money for a phenomenal charity then come to the Dublin in December.”
He added: “The Camden New Journal hamper appeal is also a unique event and we think this special performance will chime with Christmas time.”

To buy tickets for the performance, visit Bugbear Discs, the record shop next to the Dublin Castle, or drop into the pub itself. Tickets cost £15.
Send cheques payable to Camden Journal Hamper Fund to
