Sell poppies in 2008

• BERNARD Kissen laments the demise of poppies in Camden and Kentish Towns (Where’ve all the flowers gone? November 8).
They were traditionally sold by the many Second World War veterans or their widows.
Now that most of that generation are too old to stand for hours, we need a new generation of poppy sellers. Having myself been unable to buy a poppy in Camden Town for three years, I decided to volunteer, and spent 10 rewarding days, courtesy of the main Sainsbury’s, as Camden Town’s only poppy seller. One seller is not enough, and static boxes are not the answer as they are stolen. We need volunteers in Morrisons, Safeway, Tesco etc to produce a flood of poppies on our streets next year, as a small thank you to our amazing services personnel. So please don’t wait, but contact British Legion now if you would like to help.

Probably, I am one of very few residents in Somers Town wearing a poppy, which I got from the Camden High Street post office (Where’ve all the flowers gone? November 8).
However, I was surprised to see so many people wearing one at and around King’s Cross and St Pancras stations, and actually witnessed a group of young tourists from continent asking a passing gentleman why many people were wearing it.
Moerover, when I went to see ballet in Covent Garden the other evening, I found many English businessmen wearing a poppy on their suit like a uniform and felt it rather spectacular and very British.
