Camden New Journal - Letters to the Editor
Published: 8 November 2007

Walking on the Heath is no problem, but as for sexual activity…

• AFTER complaining about cruising on Hampstead Heath for years, it is odd that the Heath and Hampstead Society is now claiming the problem is getting too much attention in the management’s latest 10-year plan (Sex not walking vision for the Heath, November 1).
Their spokesman, Jeremy Wright says “Sexual activities have five times more space than walkers.”
But this is hardly surprising since walking causes no problems while cruising does, not least for some of the walkers themselves, who often have to witness the resulting litter. In an effort to deal with continuing problem of litter, the management, the City of London Corporation, has in the last few years been holding regular meetings with some of the gay groups involved (often with a representative of the society in attendance).
All of us are trying to find ways of reducing, as well as clearing up, the vast amount of condoms and other waste discarded in the cruising area of West Heath, especially acute during summer weekends. Only a few weeks ago the Terrence Higgins Trust teamed up with Gaydar Radio in a comprehensive clean-up of the site. With the Heath Constabulary regularly patrolling the area at night, good partnerships are being forged all round, so making the Heath a safer and cleaner place for all of us.
The Heath and Hampstead Society should be rejoicing.
