Camden New Journal - Letters to the Editor
Published: 8 November 2007

Spell out services elderly and sick will be denied

• THE New Journal is to be congratulated on revealing the plans of the Liberal Democrats and Tories to squeeze money out of our elderly and sick citizens.
What is worrying us is the secrecy surrounding their plans.
In Gospel Oak we have many elderly and sick people needing services which they will have to do without.
We need to know how many people will no longer be able to afford these.
We also want to know about care homes.
What are the Lib Dem and Tory plans for providing additional residential nursing places for those who can no longer remain at home?
What will happen to Wellesley Road home and will other care homes be privatised?
And what is the future for meals served by community centres? One local centre has already closed.
We would like “savings” from cuts in one type of service for the elderly and sick to be ploughed back into other services, and want reassurances that this is not about keeping council taxes down for the more affluent.
We don’t want to scaremonger but just get answers and information.
On November 15 from 6.30pm at Queen’s Crescent Community Centre we, under the banner “Local People, Local Issues”, are getting together a number of people to pool our knowledge of what is happening and likely to happen to the elderly and sick in Gospel Oak.
We invited Councillor Martin Davies, the executive member with responsibility for care for the sick and elderly, but alas he is unavailable to attend.
