Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 1 November 2007

Some properties are no longer viable for affordable rents

• I HAVE read with interest the comments from your reader Vivian Murphy (Our people need homes, October 18).
Circle 33 Housing Trust has over 12,000 properties that are offered at “affordable rents” and we invest £20 million each year to ensure that all residents have comfortable, well-maintained homes.
Some properties, though, are no longer viable for affordable rent due to their condition or size.
These are generally uneconomic to maintain, difficult to heat, soundproof and keep damp free.
A relatively small number of these are identified each year and alternative uses are found to ensure they do not continue to be a drain on our resources. We believe in getting best value so our residents get the best possible service from us.
Around 30 of our existing properties are converted to ‘market rent’ each year.
It is important to point out that the higher levels of rent that we receive from these properties is invested back into funding new and improved affordable homes for those who face homelessness, overcrowding and other pressing housing needs with the majority of new homes being built for families.
