Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 1 November 2007

Dog owners are danger to swans

• I WAS very sorry to hear about the death of the female swan at Kenwood Lake on October 6.
I understand this was caused by a dog owner allowing their lurcher dog to roam freely in the area where notices ask the public to keep their dogs on the lead.
We, the Marylebone Birdwatching Society, would like to know what is being done about the situation.
We sincerely hope that the dog owners who blatantly broke the by-laws will be prosecuted.
As most of us know, swans mate for life, and the environmental team at Kenwood have looked after these two swans (the only two on Kenwood Lake) for a number of years now.
We were all delighted when the swans started to nest again this year producing two cygnets.
It must have been devastating for the Kenwood Team to have cared for the swans so diligently only to find that some of the public have been totally irresponsible.
We are very aware of the exceptionally good work that is being done in conservation at Kenwood.
Apparently rangers get great abuse when they ask members of the public to put their dogs on the lead.
We feel it is important that a precedent is set so people know they will be penalised if they fail to control their dogs.
MALCOLM WROE
Acting Chair, Marylebone Birdwatching Society
